NAD+ vs CBD for Senior Dogs: Which is Best?

Ozzy Fitoria

As our canine companions enter their golden years, it's natural to seek ways to support their health and vitality. Two supplements that have gained considerable attention are NAD+ and CBD. Both offer potential benefits for senior dogs, but they work through different mechanisms and address different aspects of aging. This article will explore the differences between NAD+ vs CBD for senior dogs, helping you make an informed decision about which supplement might be the best fit for your furry friend. We'll delve into their potential benefits, how they work, and what to consider when choosing between them.

Understanding NAD+ and Its Benefits for Senior Dogs

Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) is a crucial coenzyme found in every cell of your dog's body. It plays a vital role in numerous biological processes, including cellular energy production, DNA repair, and gene expression. NAD+ falls with age in multiple tissues studied in rodents, and in blood in humans. No canine aging study has been published, so the same cannot be said from direct dog data. Supplementing with NAD+ precursors can help restore these levels and support overall health. Learn more about NAD+

Key Benefits of NAD+ for Senior Dogs:

  • Supports Cellular Energy: NAD+ is essential for converting nutrients into energy that the cells can use. Supplementation supports energy levels and helps combat fatigue in senior dogs.
  • Supports Cellular Systems: By supporting DNA repair and healthy cell function, NAD+ helps maintain healthy aging processes.
  • Supports Cellular Energy: No published canine study shows an NAD+ precursor improving cognition, and the human trials that measured it were null, so the supported mechanism is cellular energy and DNA repair rather than a brain benefit.
  • Supports Metabolic Function: NAD+ plays a role in metabolic processes, helping to maintain a healthy weight and metabolic function.

LongTails' NAD+ Precursor supplement supports cellular health and vitality.

Understanding CBD and Its Benefits for Senior Dogs

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-psychoactive compound found in the cannabis plant. It interacts with the endocannabinoid system (ECS), a complex network of receptors that helps regulate various physiological functions, including pain perception, inflammation, and mood. CBD products for pets are derived from hemp, which contains very low levels of THC (the psychoactive component of cannabis).

Key Benefits of CBD for Senior Dogs:

  • Supports Joint Comfort: CBD is well-known for its ability to support joint comfort and mobility in senior dogs, helping them stay active and enjoy their daily walks.
  • Helps Manage Stress and Anxiety: CBD can have a calming effect, helping to manage stress and anxiety in senior dogs, particularly those experiencing age-related cognitive decline.
  • Supports a Healthy Inflammatory Response: CBD has properties that support a healthy inflammatory response, which can benefit dogs with various age-related conditions.
  • Supports Appetite: Some senior dogs experience a decrease in appetite. CBD may help to stimulate appetite and encourage them to eat.

NAD+ vs CBD: Key Differences and How to Choose

While both NAD+ and CBD offer potential benefits for senior dogs, they work through different pathways and address different concerns. Here's a breakdown of the key differences to help you decide which might be the best choice for your pet:

  • Mechanism of Action: NAD+ works by increasing the levels of a crucial coenzyme involved in cellular energy production and DNA repair. CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system to influence pain perception, inflammation, and mood.
  • Primary Benefits: NAD+ primarily supports cellular energy, healthy aging, cognitive function, and metabolism. CBD primarily supports joint comfort, helps manage stress and anxiety, and supports a healthy inflammatory response.
  • Target Conditions: NAD+ may be beneficial for senior dogs experiencing fatigue, cognitive decline, or metabolic issues. CBD may be more suitable for dogs with joint pain, anxiety, or inflammation.
  • Considerations: When choosing between NAD+ and CBD, consider your dog's specific needs and health concerns. It's also important to consult with your veterinarian to discuss the potential benefits and risks of each supplement.

Ultimately, the best choice between NAD+ vs CBD depends on your dog's individual needs. Some owners even choose to use both supplements in conjunction, as they may offer complementary benefits. Before starting any new supplement regimen, always consult with your veterinarian to ensure it's safe and appropriate for your dog.

Safety and Considerations

Both NAD+ precursors and CBD are generally considered safe for dogs when used appropriately. However, it's important to be aware of potential side effects and precautions:

NAD+ Precursors:

  • Some dogs may experience mild gastrointestinal upset when starting NAD+ supplementation.
  • It's important to choose a high-quality NAD+ precursor supplement from a reputable brand.
  • Consult with your veterinarian before giving NAD+ precursors to dogs with pre-existing health conditions.

CBD:

  • Some dogs may experience drowsiness or diarrhea when taking CBD.
  • Start with a low dose of CBD and gradually increase it as needed.
  • Choose a CBD product specifically formulated for pets and that has been third-party tested for purity and potency.
  • Avoid giving CBD to dogs that are taking certain medications, as it may interact with them.

Always consult with your veterinarian before starting any new supplement regimen for your senior dog. They can help you determine the appropriate dosage and monitor your dog for any potential side effects.

Not sure who loves it more!

I have the 3 pickiest dog eaters ever and I usually have to get more clever than I want to when trying to get any of them to take a supplement. They needed no convincing with this, they loved it and got so excited when they heard me open the container! I got 1 container and was mostly giving it to my 5 yr old Rhodesian Ridgeback but then also started my Dutch Shepherd on it because he injured his knee playing. We started on a second container and that's when I noticed the changes. I am a skeptic through and through I'm science driven and don't believe anything until I'm convinced with evidence and supporting real life examples and let me tell you.. I'm convinced my Rhodesian doesn't nap as much wants to play ball like he did when he was a puppy and just seems to be over all waggier and smileier! It's wild, we are out of the supplement for now and the benefits seem to remain even though I haven't given it to him in over 2 weeks! The injury my Dutch Shepherd sustained was to a knee ligament and I was told that 6 weeks or more with zero activity would be a quick recovery. Anyone with a Dutch shep knows that there is no such thing as zero activity and both he and I were about to go crazy while limiting, as best I could, playing ball. I would say at best .. we mostly limited vigorous activity for a few weeks but still were active and then slowly added back some fetch and longer walks. With the addition of NAD+ i am quite confident we are where we are now because of it! I can…

    Can’t get enough!

We began using this product about 2 months ago. Everyday she looks forward to her dinner bowl full of longtails goodness! Truthfully, she would eat the entire jar in one sitting if I let her. I’ve noticed her go from lounging around the house to a spry and alert pup. Her mood seems to have changed and she is now roughing and tumbling with her adopted bro, as they did when he was a pup. Thank god for long tails, she needs the energy to keep up with the various little people seeking her attention on the daily. I am so grateful to have found this product.
