How to choose an NAD+ supplement for a dog
Short answer: three checks settle most of it. Look for a printed milligram dose of the actual NAD+ precursor, no proprietary blend hiding how much you are really getting, and a dry format. NAD+ precursors like NR and NMN are sensitive to heat and moisture, so a dry powder better protects the active than a chew, gummy, or ready-to-drink liquid, which sit in moisture the whole time they are on the shelf. What is NAD+ and why does it matter for dogs?
Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) is a coenzyme found in every cell of your dog’s body. Think of it as a cellular battery that powers a set of fundamental jobs:
- Cellular energy production in the mitochondria
- DNA repair and maintenance, through enzymes called sirtuins and PARPs
- Cellular communication
- Metabolic processes
NAD+ falls with age in multiple tissues studied in rodents, and in blood in humans. No canine aging study has been published, so we cannot say the same from direct dog data. The biology is expected to apply, and that expectation, not proof in dogs, is what the category is built on. When NAD+ runs low, cellular energy production and DNA repair are both compromised.
What NAD+ precursors do, and what the evidence supports
You do not supplement NAD+ directly in any useful way. NAD+ is a large, charged molecule, and taken by mouth it is largely broken down in the digestive tract into smaller building blocks before absorption. Cells generally take up precursors instead. That is why credible NAD+ supplements are built on a precursor such as nicotinamide riboside (NR) or nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN), rather than on NAD+ itself.
Blood NAD+
NR reliably raises blood NAD+ in human trials. Muscle and other tissue results are inconsistent, so blood is the honest limit of that claim. In dose-ranging work, 100 mg per day raised blood NAD+ by about 22 percent and 300 mg by about 51 percent.
Depth of research
NR is the most-studied NAD+ precursor in human research, with 25+ published human trials, roughly three times the NMN literature as of 2023. That matters when you are choosing between precursors: it is the one with the most human data behind it.
Tolerability
Human NR trials show clean tolerability, with no serious adverse events reported, including in dose-ranging studies.
Cellular energy
NAD+ is required for the mitochondria to convert food into usable cellular energy. Supporting these cellular systems is the rationale behind the formulation. Energy, eagerness for walks, a return to play, comfort on stairs and general alertness are the things owners tend to watch. They are observations, not promises.
What the canine evidence actually says
This is where most articles on this topic overreach, so it is worth being precise.
There is one published canine randomized controlled trial in this space (Scientific Reports, 2024). It tested a senolytic combined with an NAD+ precursor, not nicotinamide riboside on its own and not our formula. It did not measure NAD+ levels. Its objective cognitive testing showed no significant benefit; only the owner-reported questionnaire moved. It was funded by the product’s maker.
So that study does not isolate the precursor, and it is not evidence of a canine cognition benefit. Any article that presents it as a breakthrough showing improved cognition in senior dogs has misread it. No published canine study isolates an NAD+ precursor for aging or cognition.
What we are left with is a well-described mechanism, a substantial human literature on NR and blood NAD+, and a reasonable expectation that the biology carries over to dogs. That is an honest reason to consider a precursor. It is not a promise of an outcome.
Signs owners often act on
Dogs do not tell us when something changes, so owners usually notice behavior first. These are the changes that most often prompt a look at cellular support. None of them are diagnostic, and anything new or sudden is a reason to see your veterinarian rather than to reach for a supplement.
