Jiaogulan for Dogs: A Traditional Herb for Modern Canine Health

Ozzy Fitoria
Jiaogulan, a climbing vine used for centuries in Traditional Chinese Medicine, is gaining attention as a potential supplement for dogs. Learn how this "herb of immortality" may support your dog's heart health, gut balance, and overall vitality.

In the vast world of herbs and supplements, it can be tricky to separate the truly beneficial from the overhyped. But one ancient plant is making waves in the world of canine health - and for good reason.

Meet jiaogulan (Gynostemma pentaphyllum), also known as Southern Ginseng or the "herb of immortality." This unassuming climbing vine, native to Asia, has been used for centuries in Traditional Chinese Medicine to promote longevity, vitality, and disease prevention.

And now, emerging research suggests that jiaogulan may offer some impressive benefits for our canine companions too. From supporting heart health to promoting a balanced gut microbiome, this ancient herb is showing promise as a modern supplement for dogs.

Let's dive into the science behind jiaogulan and explore how it may help keep your furry friend feeling their best.

What is Jiaogulan?

Jiaogulan is a perennial climbing vine in the gourd family, native to southern China and parts of Asia. It's been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for centuries, often as a tea or tonic, to support overall health and longevity.

The herb gets its medicinal properties from a group of compounds called gypenosides - saponins that are structurally similar to the ginsenosides found in ginseng. In fact, jiaogulan is sometimes called "Southern Ginseng" due to these similarities.

But jiaogulan has some unique advantages over its more famous cousin. It contains a wider variety of saponins, is generally less expensive, and is considered more adaptogenic (meaning it helps the body adapt to stress).

In recent years, scientific interest in jiaogulan has grown, with studies exploring its potential benefits for everything from heart disease to diabetes to cancer. And while most of this research has been done in humans and lab animals, there's growing evidence that jiaogulan may offer some powerful perks for dogs too.

Potential Benefits of Jiaogulan for Dogs

So, what does the science say about jiaogulan and canine health? Let's take a look at some of the most promising findings.

1. May Support Heart Health

One of the most well-studied benefits of jiaogulan is its potential to support cardiovascular health. And this may be especially relevant for dogs, who are prone to heart conditions like valvular disease and cardiomyopathy.

A 2016 study found that jiaogulan saponins effectively lowered cholesterol levels in hamsters fed a high-fat diet. The saponins reduced total cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL ("bad") cholesterol, while increasing excretion of cholesterol and bile acids in the feces.

The researchers suggested that jiaogulan works by modulating genes involved in cholesterol absorption and metabolism - essentially helping the body process and eliminate excess cholesterol more efficiently.

While this study was done in hamsters, the results are promising for dogs too. Many canine heart conditions are associated with high blood cholesterol levels, so a supplement that naturally supports cholesterol balance could be a valuable addition to a heart-healthy regimen.

Of course, more research is needed to confirm these effects in dogs specifically. But the existing evidence suggests that jiaogulan may be a safe, natural way to support your pup's cardiovascular well-being.

2. May Promote a Healthy Gut Microbiome

Another exciting area of jiaogulan research is its potential as a prebiotic - a substance that feeds the beneficial bacteria in the gut.

The gut microbiome is a complex ecosystem of microbes that plays a crucial role in everything from digestion to immunity to overall health. Imbalances in this delicate system have been linked to a wide range of health issues in both humans and dogs.

Enter jiaogulan. A 2022 review paper explored the herb's potential prebiotic properties and how they may influence gut health. The researchers found that jiaogulan's saponins and polysaccharides (complex sugars) can selectively feed beneficial gut bacteria, promoting a healthier balance of microbes.

This is the mechanism researchers are investigating. The published work is laboratory and animal research, not treatment of dogs, and covers:

  • Anti-cancer activity
  • Anti-obesity effects
  • Reduced inflammation
  • Improved antioxidant status
  • Enhanced immune function

While these effects have yet to be directly studied in dogs, the principles of gut health are similar across mammals. Supporting a balanced, diverse gut microbiome is one of the most powerful ways to promote overall health and disease resilience - and jiaogulan may be a valuable tool in that effort.

3. May Offer Antioxidant and Anti-Inflammatory Benefits

Chronic inflammation and oxidative stress are two of the key drivers of disease and aging in both humans and dogs. Antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds can help combat these processes, supporting healthier aging and disease prevention.

Jiaogulan appears to offer both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits, thanks to its unique blend of saponins and other bioactive compounds.

The 2022 review mentioned earlier highlighted jiaogulan's antioxidant potential, noting that it can scavenge harmful free radicals and boost the body's natural antioxidant defenses. This may help protect cells and tissues from oxidative damage, a key factor in many age-related diseases.

The review also pointed to jiaogulan's anti-inflammatory effects, which may be beneficial for a range of conditions from arthritis to allergies to gastrointestinal disease.

Again, more research is needed to confirm these benefits in dogs specifically. But the existing evidence suggests that jiaogulan may be a powerful ally in the fight against chronic inflammation and oxidative stress - two of the biggest threats to canine health and longevity.

Is Jiaogulan Right for Your Dog?

While the research on jiaogulan for dogs is still in its early stages, the results so far are promising. This ancient herb appears to offer a range of potential benefits for canine health, from supporting the heart and gut to fighting inflammation and oxidative stress.

Of course, as with any supplement, it's important to talk to your veterinarian before starting your dog on jiaogulan. They can help you weigh the potential benefits and risks, determine an appropriate dosage, and monitor your dog's response.

It's also crucial to choose a high-quality, dog-specific jiaogulan supplement from a reputable brand. Look for products that have been third-party tested for purity and potency, and that are formulated specifically for canine physiology.

With the guidance of your vet and a commitment to quality, jiaogulan may be a valuable addition to your dog's wellness routine - a natural way to support their vitality, longevity, and overall health.

As the science continues to evolve, one thing is clear: the ancient wisdom of herbs like jiaogulan has a lot to offer our modern canine companions. By tapping into the power of nature, we can help our dogs thrive - today, tomorrow, and for years to come.

A note on what we actually sell

LongTails does not make a jiaogulan supplement, and this article is not selling you one. Our formula contains no jiaogulan. LongTails NAD+ Precursor is built on 200 mg of nicotinamide riboside plus 1,500 mg of hydrolyzed collagen per scoop, both printed on the label with no proprietary blend. Different compound, different purpose.

If you came here researching jiaogulan specifically, buy it from a supplier your veterinarian trusts and ask them about dosing for your dog. If what brought you here is the broader question of cellular support in an aging dog, that is the area we do work in, and our guide to NAD+ for dogs covers what the research does and does not show.

Not sure who loves it more!

I have the 3 pickiest dog eaters ever and I usually have to get more clever than I want to when trying to get any of them to take a supplement. They needed no convincing with this, they loved it and got so excited when they heard me open the container! I got 1 container and was mostly giving it to my 5 yr old Rhodesian Ridgeback but then also started my Dutch Shepherd on it because he injured his knee playing. We started on a second container and that's when I noticed the changes. I am a skeptic through and through I'm science driven and don't believe anything until I'm convinced with evidence and supporting real life examples and let me tell you.. I'm convinced my Rhodesian doesn't nap as much wants to play ball like he did when he was a puppy and just seems to be over all waggier and smileier! It's wild, we are out of the supplement for now and the benefits seem to remain even though I haven't given it to him in over 2 weeks! The injury my Dutch Shepherd sustained was to a knee ligament and I was told that 6 weeks or more with zero activity would be a quick recovery. Anyone with a Dutch shep knows that there is no such thing as zero activity and both he and I were about to go crazy while limiting, as best I could, playing ball. I would say at best .. we mostly limited vigorous activity for a few weeks but still were active and then slowly added back some fetch and longer walks. With the addition of NAD+ i am quite confident we are where we are now because of it! I can…

    Can’t get enough!

We began using this product about 2 months ago. Everyday she looks forward to her dinner bowl full of longtails goodness! Truthfully, she would eat the entire jar in one sitting if I let her. I’ve noticed her go from lounging around the house to a spry and alert pup. Her mood seems to have changed and she is now roughing and tumbling with her adopted bro, as they did when he was a pup. Thank god for long tails, she needs the energy to keep up with the various little people seeking her attention on the daily. I am so grateful to have found this product.
